Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools at This Practice
What this means for you
Like many GP practices across the NHS, we are beginning to use approved artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support the care we provide. The main example is AI-assisted transcription (sometimes called “ambient voice technology” or an “AI scribe”), which can listen during a consultation and help the clinician produce accurate notes, summaries, or letters.
These tools exist to reduce the time clinicians spend on paperwork, so they can spend more of the consultation focused on you.
AI supports our clinicians — it never replaces them
Any information produced by an AI tool is always reviewed, checked, and approved by the clinician before it becomes part of your medical record. AI does not make clinical decisions about your care. Responsibility for your care always remains with the healthcare professional treating you.
Your consent
If a clinician wishes to use an AI transcription tool during your consultation, they will tell you at the start and ask for your verbal consent before using it.
- You are free to say no, and you do not need to give a reason.
- Declining will never affect the care or treatment you receive — your consultation will simply be documented in the usual way.
- You can change your mind at any point, including part-way through a consultation.
How your information is protected
We take the confidentiality of your information extremely seriously. Any AI tool used at this practice:
- has been assessed and approved in line with NHS clinical safety standards and national guidance, including guidance from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and NHS England
- complies with UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018)
- is subject to a Data Protection Impact Assessment before use
- does not use your information for any purpose other than supporting your direct care.
Audio from consultations is not retained once the clinical record has been completed and checked, in line with the tool’s approved use.
